I taught secondary and college level physics at the University Preparatory School for Overseas Chinese Students in Taiwan for seven and a half years. As the only female and feminist physics teacher in my school, I was concerned about the gender issues in my teaching and in my classrooms. I identified and revised the military-oriented examples and the masculine language used in the standardized textbook. I helped students to understand gender stereotypes in science classrooms and provide them with a feminist framework to reconsider these stereotypes. According to some of my female students, I was their role model and many of them reclaimed their interest in physics through my teaching. I also implemented a feminist pedagogy that included equal call-outs to female and male students, downplayed the traditional authoritarian teacher's role, and encouraged students to work collaboratively rather than competitively. I also encouraged students to challenge their teacher and the textbooks in constructive ways. In order to contextualize my teaching, I applied my experiences in engineering and in labs to embed students' understanding of physics concepts.
